We are going for Friday thru Monday. That is 4 days of diving. The weather in North Carolina always has the potential for us to be blown out for any or all of the trip. Any days that are blown out will give you the option for a refund of that day’s charter fee, or you can choose to keep it as credit with Olympus, for a future trip.

This trip is being led by Stuart Vernon. Diving out of Morehead City is Stuart’s favorite diving in the world (so far, anyway!). The captain and crew of the MV Olympus are absolutely top notch in their safety, professionalism, experience, and knowledge of North Carolina diving and dive sites.

Diving out of Morehead City is generally fairly warm, clear water, on many historic wrecks that were sunk in action during World War II. These wrecks have become habitat for Sand Tiger sharks. There is no guarantee we will see any sharks. We usually do see at least a few and could possibly find a wreck with as many as 10 or 20 of them hanging around. They are extremely docile, bordering on shy. When we find them, it makes for some great photography opportunities.

One of the highlights of many peoples’ trip to dive in North Carolina is diving a very intact German U-
boat, the U-352, which was sunk in action in May of 1942 by the US Coast Guard Cutter Icarus. It lies in about 110’ of water and can be a spectacular dive. If weather conditions permit, we will make the trek to do at least one dive on the U-352 during this trip.

North Carolina diving is considered advanced diving.

The minimum requirements are:

  •  A minimum of 25 logged dives. Advanced Open Water Certification preferred. Experienced divers with Open Water Certification and required dives are accepted.
  • At least 2 dives in the ocean to 70 feet or greater.
  • At least 2 logged boat ocean dives.
  • At least 2 dives in the last 12 months.
  • Minimum Age for Full Day Dive Trip is 15 years of age.

For Rebreather Divers, the minimum requirements are:

  • CCR Card for the unit you are diving
  • 50 Logged Hours on that unit
  • Previous 90+ feet Ocean Boat dives on CCR
  • Must carry Bailout Bottle
  • Have dived using a CCR in the last 6 months
  • Minimum Age - 15 years old

Also, every diver must have an SMB (aka Safety Sausage).
If you want to go, but don’t quite meet the minimum requirements, give us a call. We have options to
get you where you need to be in time for this trip!
Maximum depths for this trip will be as deep as 115’. Nitrox certification is strongly recommended.
Bottom temps at this time of year (late April) could be anywhere from upper 60s to low 70s.

This trip is very flexible. You can come for all 4 days or just Saturday and Sunday, or whatever works for
you. As such, we are not attempting to handle logistics like lodging and transportation. Some of us will
be staying at the Bask Hotel (https://baskhotel.com/), which is VERY conveniently located across the
street from the dive shop and their dock. You can book lodging. The Hampton Inn Morehead City is just
a few minutes down the street and is also highly recommended. And for the more budget-minded, some
of us will be at the Hollowell’s Motel, a few minutes away in Atlantic Beach.
We will get together for dinner each night, with any and all of you that care to join us. You should plan
to bring your own snacks or lunch on the boat each day. The boat provides drinking water and coolers
with ice for you to put stuff in, but the rest is up to you.

Olympus Dive Center can rent you any gear you need. If you don’t have your own tanks, Olympus has
plenty of tank rental options. And the cost of a rental tank of Nitrox is only a few dollars per tank more
than getting your own tank filled with Nitrox, so renting theirs is a decent option if you don’t have your
own or just don’t feel like schlepping them there and back from home. They do offer steel 100 and 120
tanks (and a variety of other sizes), which are also highly recommended.

Not included in the price:

  • Lodging
  • Tanks
  • Food
  • Equipment

In other words, the price ONLY covers your boat rides, weights, and water. Boat rides in NC are not
cheap. The wrecks are pretty far offshore and it takes a lot of fuel and time to get there and back. We
will generally leave the dock shortly after sunrise and get back around 2 or 3 o’clock in the afternoon.

In order to sign up, we need a deposit of 50% immediately. Payment in full is required before April 21 st .
Within 30 days of the trip, all payments are non-refundable (unless a day is cancelled by the shop due to
weather).

If you have questions, please call or email the shop and we will get you sorted out!
